Schweizer sets 5000-meter record at Drake Relays homecoming
BRANSON MO NEWS: Missouri senior Karissa Schweizer set the Drake Relays’ record in the women’s 5,000-meter race Thursday evening in Des Moines, Iowa, with a time of 15 minutes, 23.21 seconds.In a triumphant return to her home state, Schweizer posted the fastest 5,000 time in the NCAA this season by nine seconds.
“It means so much to be being back in my hometown, where it all started,” Schweizer told The Des Moines Register. “To be able to run like I am now — I never would have even dreamed of that when I was a high-schooler. So it really brings back a lot of memories.”Redshirt sophomore Jordyn Kleve and sophomore Melissa Menghini placed ninth and 17th, respectively, behind Schweizer in the event.Schweizer’s family will have the opportunity to create more memories at the Drake Relays as younger sister Kelsey Schweizer will run as the anchor for Dowling Catholic High School in the girls 4×800 relay Saturday morning.Schweizer’s teammate Megan Cunningham won the women’s 10,000 with a time of 33:19.25. The redshirt senior, who recovered from a near-fatal car crash during her sophomore year and returned to the track, posted the fourth-best 10,000 time in Missouri history and ninth-best in the NCAA on Thursday. With both event titles, Missouri became the first school since 1994 to sweep the 5,000 and 10,000 at the Drake Relays.Redshirt freshman Karina Liz finished third in the women’s 800 with a personal-best time of 2:08.77, while redshirt senior Valeska Halamicek won the women’s unseeded 1,500 heat with a personal-best time of 4:26.44.
