Globe wins 17 awards in MPA contest

BRANSON, Mo. — The Joplin Globe brought home 17 awards in the Missouri Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, including best overall design.The Globe, which competes with Missouri’s largest newspapers such as The Kansas City Star and the St. Louis Post Dispatch in all categories, also picked up first-place awards for best news photo, best story about the outdoors and best sports feature. In the sports feature category, Globe writers won all three awards. The awards ceremony was held Sept. 25 at Chateau on the Lake in Branson.Judges praised the newspaper’s design, noting the use of photos throughout, its consistency and its ease in reading. Brent Fisher is the Globe’s design editor. Earlier this year, he was named Designer of the Year by Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. in a contest held among the 86 papers owned by Globe parent company CNHI.
Laurie Sisk, a Globe photographer, received the first-place award for best news photo for her entry of a standoff in Galena, Kansas. “What stood out in this photo is the contrast between the children’s swings in the yard and the FBI in full tactical gear — which you hope the children were not around to see,” commented one judge.Levi Payton, Globe …
