Big Cats: Ozark moves into Missouri football’s largest class

Christian County Backyard Brawl rivalry game set for Sept. 14Ozark football coach Chad Depee didn’t foresee the Tigers leaving the ranks of Class 5 after 10 seasons.The Missouri State High School Activities Association threw Depee for a loop on Aug. 17 by announcing Ozark went from being one of the biggest schools in enrollment in Class 5 to one of the smallest in Class 6. The Tigers had been a Class 5 member since 2008.
The move is effective immediately, tossing the Tigers into a football class amongst the 32 largest high schools in the state.“I wasn’t expecting it and found out when everybody else did,” Depee said. “It is what it is. We talk about controlling what you can control. We can’t control our numbers in the district we are in. We control one game at a time. When they tell us to go play someone in Week 10, we’ll play whoever it is. Whether it’s Class 5 or Class 6, it doesn’t matter. We get an opportunity to play and we’ll be thankful for that.”Ozark will be paired up in Class 6 District 3 with fellow Central Ozark Conference member Joplin, Springfield metro area rival Kickapoo and a handful of suburban St. Louis schools that include Eureka, Kirkwood, Lafayette Wildwood, Lindbergh and Northwest Cedar Hill.
The Tigers matched up against Kickapoo in an Aug. 17 jamboree at Nixa, and meet Joplin Oct. 5. They have no history, recent or otherwise with the rest of the teams in the district. “Of course, with Class 6 you’re talking bigger schools. You’re also talking about some schools we know nothing about,” Depee said. “That’s probably the biggest thing. The majority of the district is in St. Louis.
