Branson comeback falls short against state powerhouse
BRANSON MO NEWS: Heading into Friday’s game against state-powerhouse Webb City, Branson Football head coach Anthony Hays told his team to leave everything they had on the field.“We had nothing to lose, that was our mindset,” Hays said. “We’re going to go at these guys as hard as we can and give them the best game that we can. Play with our whole hearts and just see what happens, so it’s a really good lesson for us, if we can put it all on the line anything can happen.”It was a lesson the team took to heart, as the now 2-2 Pirates put a scare into the visiting state powerhouse as Branson fell just short, losing 22-20. Coming into Friday’s game, the Cardinal’s smallest margin of victory this season was a 20-point win over Joplin.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Pirates took a 3-0 lead in the second, which proved to be short-lived as Webb City answered with a kick return for a touchdown and two-point conversion to take an 8-3 lead.Webb City would then go onto score two more times to extend the lead to 22-3. The Pirates then struck back just before halftime with a touchdown pass from junior quarterback Gabe Sylvester to sophomore wide receiver Brady Blackwell.Hays said those plays showcased Sylvester’s playmaking ability to turn busted plays into positive yards.“We know his athleticism,” Hays said. “We knew it was a matter of time before he broke out and made plays.“A lot of what you saw were the original plays busted up where Gabe prolonged it, and the receivers made plays down the field.
