The Queen Mary debate wages on. First responses came after a Press-Telegram story about the ship’s horrible condition. The arguing continues after the announcement last week by Urban Commons regarding the wildly ambitious and costly plans to revitalize and save the ship as a premier and profitable tourist destination.We were a tad skeptical over an idea that would likely cost more than half a billion dollars: half of that to just fix the ship and half to bring in attractions to lure guests and customers. And the former needs to be done first, because experts who inspected the ship don’t give it much time before it begins listing to port or starboard. Doing the sexy stuff first — the indoor adventure park, the pool, the ersatz beach, the amphitheater, the glimmering shops and pricey restaurants and the strolling busker accordionist, would be the ultimate in rearranging the deck chairs.
