Smart’s Soundbites: Kirby Smart updates injuries, discusses game preparation for Tennessee

BRANSON MO NEWS: Georgia head coach Kirby Smart met with the media Tuesday ahead of Saturday’s matchup with Tennessee. He discussed the injury statuses of Monty Rice and Tyler Simmons, as well the game preparation for the Volunteers.Who’s available?Monty Rice has been dealing with a MCL injury, and Smart indicated that he’s unsure whether or not he will be available for Saturday’s game.

“It would be a big bonus for us,” Smart said of potentially getting Rice back. “He’s definitely moving around better, looks much better. I just hope he plays because we have depth problems when he doesn’t.”Although his status is still unclear, senior linebacker Natrez Patrick indicated how relieved he was to get Rice back in the rotation due to the number of snaps he’s had to take.Smart said junior receiver Tyler Simmons hasn’t been able to practice the last two days but he is running. He suffered a shoulder injury in the game against Missouri, but it is unclear when he will be cleared for contact.Cade Mays and the Tennessee connectionSmart didn’t indicate whether or not freshman offensive lineman Cade Mays will be in the starting lineup on Saturday with the injury to Ben Cleveland, but with a rotation throughout practice this week, Mays could likely have a role on the offensive line in some capacity.The game may be just another game to the coaching staff and the players, but to Mays, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, the game could likely mean a little more.
