Taney County Partnership helps find employees in Puerto Rico

BRANSON MO NEWS: TANEY COUNTY, Mo. (KY3/KSPR) – A labor shortage across the Ozarks is making some businesses look at your not-so-typical hiring avenues. The Taney County Partnership at the Branson Chamber of Commerce is part of a new recruiting effort in Puerto Rico.

The Programs and Communications Director for the Taney County Partnership, Heather Hardinger, said the shortage in the region impacts much of the hospitality business. Hardinger said they are looking to Puerto Rico for employees because people there are U.S. citizens and don’t require a work visa. “We can go down there, share our mission, share a little bit more about the openings that we have, and there is a legal process through the U.S. Department of Labor that employers have to go through in order to become authorized to recruit there,” she explained of the process. “We go down and recruit and do the marketing and it’s been very successful for us.” The partnership traveled to Puerto Rico seven times in the past year to market available job opportunities.
In the most recent trip to Puerto Rico, the focus was recruiting graduate nurses. Hardinger described a shortage in that field as well. “Locally we have a lot of really good educational institutions that are training people in different occupations that we need, but we don’t have enough,” said Hardinger. “In Puerto Rico, the climate there is they have a lot of nursing schools, they have a lot of really high-quality programs that are accredited programs and a lot of individuals who are looking for opportunities to move to the mainland to work.” Hardinger described it as a win win situation.

Lastly, Hardinger explained there are still plenty of recruiting efforts going on locally and regionally. “We have really tapped our market pretty well, our employers here …
