Vulture Venture highlights ‘Nature’s Clean-up Crew’

BRANSON MO NEWS: The winter months in Ozark Mountain Country have always seen visitors from the north come down to take advantage of warmer temperatures, but the “snowbirds” weren’t the first birds to visit during the off season. For hundreds of years, vultures, who were the center of Saturday’s “Vulture Venture” at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Shepherd of the Hills Fish Hatchery, have come to the Tri-Lakes Area.

“Our claim to fame is that anybody can have an ‘Eagle Day’ event across the nation, we’re one of the few places, especially in Missouri, that can have a ‘vulture’ event, so we take advantage of that,” said Missouri Department of Conservation’s Shepherd of the Hills Hatchery’s Interpretive Center Manager John Miller. “The ‘Vulture Venture’ is an annual event for us, and we take advantage of the fact that vultures have been along this valley for hundreds of years.”

To prepare for the event, Miller saved some road kill and then used it to attract the hungry birds so those in attendance could get a closer look with binoculars and spyglasses.
