An ode to Odom’s post-Auburn fiery press conference a year later

BRANSON MO NEWS: Barry Odom stepped to the podium and placed his hands on its sides.It was Sept. 23, 2017, and his Missouri Tigers had just been trounced 51-14 by visiting Auburn. Standing in front of the gathered media, with the Tigers’ record sitting at 1-3 on the season, Odom told everyone to get their pens ready and turn their microphones on. As he put it, it was time to “talk real life.”“I want to get one thing straight; I’m going to win here,” Odom began. “That’s going to happen. We will win.”

What ensued was the most animated 3 minutes and 30 seconds Missouri fans have seen of their head coach in his three seasons at the helm. The stern and yet calm opening quickly evolved into a passionate, forceful “state of the program” in which Odom said the Tigers were in the midst of a “turnaround”: one that would take time. Normally calm and reserved at the podium, Missouri’s head football coach showed a different side that night.Hearkening back to the words of legendary Saturday Night Live character Stefon — this rant had everything.Odom made allusions to Larry Smith and Gary Pinkel-era turnarounds, and stated that he was built to be the man to complete this one. He imitated fans he’d heard trashing the team on his walk to the team complex, and mentioned how many had foolishly lobbied for Pinkel to be fired before he became the winningest coach in program history. Odom spoke about the 2005 death of Missouri linebacker Aaron O’Neal, too, saying he knew what dark days truly were.And, with one small comment woven into the fierce 225-second diatribe, Odom turned some kid at Rock Bridge High School into the most famous reserve offensive lineman in MSHSAA history.“I’ve got a guy …
