Illinois State Fiddlers Association competition at EPC
BRANSON MO NEWS: Fiddlers around state are expected to gather Saturday, Oct 6, and Sunday, Oct. 7, at the Effingham Performance Center for the 54th Annual Illinois State Old Time Fiddlers’ Association Fiddle Contest.The EPC doors open at 4 p.m. for the annual Jam and Fiddle Swap on Saturday followed by a benefit concert at 7 p.m. featuring Hand Picked, a group of young bluegrass musicians playing traditional favorites. The band is made up of students handpicked by their instructor Chris Talley, owner of the Bluegrass Shack in New Athens. They were selected to compete in the 2017 and 2018 Youth in Bluegrass Contest in Silver Dollar City in Branson, Missouri.
Also appearing on Saturday night are Fiddle Genevieve Harrison Koester and Smith Koester on banjo playing old-time fiddle tunes and Patt & Possum, featuring Patt Plunket on piano and Charlie Walden on fiddle playing traditional bluegrass music and other hillbilly fiddle styles. Headlining Saturday night’s entertainment is the band Gold Country, playing old country music.Tickets for the each day are $5 plus tax available at the Effingham Performance Center.
The Illinois State Old Time Fiddle Contest begins at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Effingham Performance Center. All contestants must be registered for the event by 12:30 p.m. Preregistration fee is $8 and $10 if registering at the contest.There will be four divisions of competition. including Beginner (10 and under), Junior (11-19), Senior (70 and over) and Open Division. Trophies and prize money is awarded to the top fiddlers in each division.Winner of the Open Division is eligible to compete in the National Old Time Fiddlers’ Contest and Festival in Weiser, Idaho.
